「TEDで英語を学ぼう！」シリーズの第３回をお届けします。

このシリーズでは、第二言語習得論に基づく英語トレーニング「スパトレ（SPTR）」の「TED Talk」を使った英語学習法について紹介しています。

学習の手順や効果的に学習するためのポイントについて具体的に解説しているので、特に中級以上の英語学習者に参考にしてもらえると思います。

今回取り上げるプレゼンテーションは、「青少年向けの簡単なDIY課題の作り方（原題：Easy DIY projects for kid engineers）」です。

プレゼンターのフォーン・チョウは、身の回りにある紙や布を使って、費用のかからない面白いDIY課題を考案し、生徒たちが興味を持ってテクノロジーに触れられるように工夫しています。

予習では、TED Talk「青少年向けの簡単なDIY課題の作り方」の動画を視聴し、スクリプトを確認して内容を理解します。

この段階で、意味がわからない単語は、オンライン辞書などで調べます。

日本語の意味は知っていても、英語で説明することができない単語があれば、ケンブリッジやロングマンのオンライン英英辞典などで調べて、英語で説明できるように準備します。

参考までに、私が予習で調べた英単語を例示します。

devastated：destroyed; demolished; upset; crushed; hopeless; feeling extremely shocked and sad

addicted：devoted to a certain habit; dependent upon; unable to stop taking drugs, or doing something as a habit.

heck：expressing surprise, frustration, or dismay

infuriating：very annoying; extremely annoying; causing anger and annoyance

viral：become popular really fast; spreading very quickly to many people especially through the Internet

intimidating：frightening; threatening; compel by means of threat or force; making you feel frightened or nervous; making you feel worried and not confident

googly eyes：round white plastic objects, with round black parts that move when shaken, that you can stick onto toys or other things to make eyes

underrepresented：provide with insufficient or inadequate representation; If a type of person or thing is underrepresented in a group or organization, there are not enough of them in it.

tutorial：a document or website on a computer that shows you how to use a product in a series of easy stages

relevant：related; connected to the current subject

posse：a group of the same kind of people; group of people who share an interest or hobby; someone’s group of friends – used especially by young people

ここに挙げた単語は、日本語訳だと意味がつかみづらいですが、英語の定義だとどんな状態やものなのかイメージしやすいですね。

オンラインレッスンでは、最初にトレーナーから10個の英単語の意味を質問されます。

さきほど例示した単語以外も出題されるので、わからない単語があったら予習のときに調べて、英語で説明できるようにしておいてくださいね。

単語チェックの後は、理解度チェックです。トレーナーからプレゼンテーションの内容に関する質問をされます。

なお、質問の中に出てくる”TED Residency”とは何かについては、下記のTEDからの引用を参照してください。私も質問されたときに意味がわからず、戸惑いました。

TED Residency
The TED Residency program (2016–2019) was an incubator for breakthrough ideas, open to all via a competitive application. Those chosen as TED Residents spent fourteen weeks at TED headquarters in New York City, collaborating with one another on their ideas. Each Resident also developed a TED talk.

簡単に言うと、TEDレジデンシープログラムというものがあって、それに選ばれた人は、TEDの本社に14週間滞在して、画期的なアイデアを発展されるために協力し合い、その成果をTED Talkで発表する、ということです。

この講演のプレゼンテーターであるフォーン・チョウも2016年のTEDレジデントなんですね。

オンラインレッスンの最後は、プレゼンテーションの内容の要約です。

Fran Qiu designs engineering projects for middle school and high school students, often using materials that are pretty unexpected.

フォーン・チョウは、中学生や高校生向けの技術工作の課題を考案しています。よく考えもつかないような材料を使うことがあります。

Her inspiration comes from problems in my daily life.

インスピレーションの源は、彼女が日常で行きあたる問題です。

For example, she made a physical version of Flappy Bir. Then she uploaded a demo of this project online, and to her surprise it went viral. It had over two million views in just a few days.

たとえば、実物版『フラッピーバード』を作った作品のビデオをネットで公開したところ爆発的な人気を呼び、ほんの数日で再生回数は２百万を超えました。

What’s more interesting are people’s comments. A lot of people wanted to make it their own, or asked her how it was made.

さらに興味深かったのは、人々のコメントです。多くの人が自分でも作りたいと作り方を尋ねてきました。

This kind of confirmed her idea that through a creative project, we can teach people about engineering.

このことで、彼女は「課題を工夫することで技術工作を教えられるという自分の考えが肯定された」と感じました。

She had the idea of using creative engineering projects to teach students. She started with paper and fabric. They are pretty cheap and can be found anywhere around the house. Most importantly, students were able to insert their own creativity into the project.

創意工夫を凝らした工学課題を授業に使うことを考え、安価で、身の回りのどこにでもある紙と布を材料に使ったところ、生徒たちは自分の創意工夫を生かして課題に取り組みました。

She also started to take these workshops outside of school and into the community. There were a lot more women and minorities than she expected, and that you wouldn’t usually see at a traditional engineering workshop.

このようなワークショップを学校外の地域内でも始めたところ、従来の工学のワークショップでは普通見かけないような多くの女性やマイノリティの人々が参加しました。

There’s a wide variety of problems that contribute to the lack of diversity in the technology force. One solution could be to introduce technology to students through creative projects.

エンジニア人口に多様性が欠けてしまっている問題の解決法の１つは、課題を工夫してテクノロジーに触れる機会を生徒たちに与えることです。

How do we start to change the perception of technology? She have always designed projects following three principles.

彼女は、テクノロジーに対する見方を変えるために、次の３原則を常に念頭に置いて課題を考案しています。

First is having a low floor, and that means this project is easy to get started.

１番目の原則は、敷居を下げること。これは取っつきやすい課題にするということ。

Second principle is having a high ceiling. This means that there’s a lot of room to grow, and students are constantly being challenged.

２番目の原則は、天井を高くしておくこと。つまり、大きく成長できる環境を作るということであり、生徒たちには常に挑戦が与えられているということ。

Third principle is customization. This means that we can make this project relevant to anyone.

３番目の原則は、カスタマイゼーション。課題を誰にとっても関心を持てる内容にできるということ。
